I enjoyed getting practical experience blogging, which is something I have never done, and would have had no inclination to try if not for this course. I also appreciated learning material coming from many different sources, instead of one just one text book. A3 made a lot of sense to me for a final assignment. I think it’s a great way to integrate everything we have been working on throughout the semester.
There are a number of practical applications for what we have been learning about social media. The most obvious application would be if you were seeking employment as a social media manager, a PR position, or something of the like. Even if not looking for a position that expressly deals with social media, we have learned a lot that can help inform how to conduct yourself responsibly on social media as an employee. Learning about different social media platform and their strength and weaknesses is also very useful for helping to figure out how to project yourself on the web. With a sound understanding of social media you are better able to develop yourself as a brand and project your image on different platforms.
I appreciate the intention of A2. I think it’s great that the department listens to alumni in the work force, and incorporates their feedback into the curriculum, however, I think that the video assignment is outside the scope of this course, or should be implemented differently. If video production is that important to those in the RPW field, then I think it’s best to add a designated video production class to the degree. If A2 remains a part of the class, I think a bit more time should be given to the process of video production. I think it would also help if the groups were larger, perhaps even making it a class project.
I enjoyed the course and learned a lot. I think the class was very well executed, especially considering this was the first implementation.
