Awkward Family Photos is a well know blog where users submit funny photos of themselves or their family. The blog was started in May 2009 by two friends, “Mike and Doug”. Initially the content was creator generated, featuring photos of Mike and Doug and their friends, but in true Web 2.0 form, the blog quickly became a place for users to participate with their own submissions.
Whether you find the content funny or not, the blog claims to receive “millions of hits daily and submissions from around the world”, and does a number of things well.
Awkward Family Photos is the epitome of user interaction for a blog. Instead of a blogger creating posts and relegating readers in the comments, the posts are user created, and the blogger(s) act as curator, finding the submission worthy of being shared.
The blog posts once or twice a day, every day. This frequency and consistency helps create a steady stream of traffic, and rewards users for returning to the blog on a regular basis.

The content of the posts is very consistent also. You know what you are going to get: an awkward photo, a funny caption, and hopefully a chuckle.
Part of the beauty of the blog is the simplicity of it. The intention of the blog is clear: share a funny and perhaps cringe worthy snapshot of your life and enjoy some catharsis.
The site is simple to navigate, and they smartly feature the most popular posts of the week/month/all time on the home page.
There is regular participation in the comments section. About the only point of improvement I might suggest for there to be more engagement from the blog staff with the audience in the comments.
I find it surprising that there are so many people willing to share personal and embarrassing photos with no incentive. Would you submit to Awkward Family Photos, and why?
