This reading describes the internet as the mechanism through which interactivity happens, and defines it by these aspects:
Web 1.0 is the name given to the period when old mass media business models were applied to the internet. This was done in an attempt to monetize internet users (make profit from them). This was a failure because it didn’t consider that the internet isn’t a push medium like TV. Users want to make content and communicate with each other.
Web 2.0 is marked by the realization that web users are not like a TV audience. The two hallmarks of web 2.0 are personalization and content creation. Businesses figured out that UCC (User Created Content) could be harnessed for business value, and in this way users play an active role in building one’s business. With the ease of publishing internet content by users, SNS (Social Network Sites) soon followed.
- There is no “one” internet. The internet is a diverse multimedia interface w/ text, pictures, video, audio, etc…
- The internet is deeply integrated into our daily lives
- Two way communication is inherent, which allows users to participate and collaborate.

Web 2.0 has many positive aspects. It is democratizing, empowering, and emancipating because of UCC, and decentralized media control.
Web 2.0 has proven to be a powerful tool for activists and those with limited free speech. The ability to easily access information, create content, and connect with anyone has become an essential part of our everyday lives.
There are dangers inherent to Web 2.0 however. The deep integration of the internet in our lives makes us increasingly reliant upon the digital. This dependency make users vulnerable to control mechanisms, as information about us can be quantified, sorted, and categorized. Furthermore, virtually all social interaction now occurs in a mediated space. Simply opening a website creates a digital footprint which will be logged and analyzed.
As long as users are willing to accept personal data collection as the cost for “free” services on the internet, I believe the practice will continue. Is it a trade off you are willing to accept, or would you rather pay for some services, in exchange for greater privacy?
